How to Become a Better Catalog Shopper

Shopping by catalog has been a way for people to conveniently purchase items without leaving their homes. Catalog companies not only make money selling you their goods but also by selling their mailing lists to other companies. Soon you will have a mailbox filled with catalogs!

There was a time in my life where I was on just about everyone’s mailing list and I was getting my share of catalogs in the mail. I would browse through them and buy what ever I wanted. It was fun and convenient and plus I didn’t have to get in the car and visit different stores to find something to buy.

Sound familiar? Well, over the years I ended up with a garage full of things I no longer wanted. I was seeing that I was buying things out of impulse. I needed to come up with a better way to buy the things I really wanted and to manage my spending.

Where there is a will there is a way. I did come up with a pretty good strategy. With each catalog, I circled the products I wanted and then put the catalog away in a drawer. Within about a month, I had a small collection of catalogs marked with items waiting to be purchased.

By the end of the month, I would go through the pages and review all the items I wanted. Surprisingly, I would rarely make a purchase! The effect of the catalog had worn off! I was no longer interested in purchasing what I had marked to order. I was through buying in the moment!

I was now actually in control of my buying habits and instead of the catalog controlling my buying. I was actually making better buying decisions and saving money. I later modified the strategy and made a list of things I did need to purchase within a year. After the year was up, the list went in the circular file.

Now I use the same strategy with the Internet. I love to bookmark sites where I have found something interesting to purchase. I will let my preliminary inquiry stew for about a month. If I don’t purchase the item, I delete the bookmark.

The strategy has put me in a position of power and control. I did have to get use to this new position that I really never had before. I was distinguishing the difference between purchasing what I wanted and what I needed. It was obvious that a lot of the things I was purchasing I didn’t need.

I no longer get all the catalogs I used to get and my spending is under control. The key was being aware that I had a problem and I needed to find a way to break my habit. With a little self control I was able to cut down on an impulsive behavior that was actually controlling me with every page I turned. I now have peace of mind knowing that I am now in control of my life.

How to Beautify Your Yard with Garden Décor

A great way to get into the spirit of spring is to upgrade your yard with some attractive Garden Décor. This can be one of your best investments to not only add value to your yard but to make it beautiful for years to come. If you are looking for some ideas to decorate your yard, keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be expensive or time consuming to do.

All you need is a little imagination and a little initiative to turn your yard into a creative masterpiece. A great place to get started is your local hardware or home center. Not only will you find some of the items you may be looking for but some stores carry publications dedicated to decorating a yard.

You may even want to stop by nearest bookstore or newsstand and look for ideas through some of the home & garden magazines they may have available. You may also want to visit a friend or neighbor’s house just to see and get a feel for what is possible for your yard.

There are more choices today than ever before. You may want to start out small and add a bird house, bird feeder or bird bath to your yard or hang a decorative wind chime on your porch. Lawn ornaments are a favorite of many as are garden plaques to spruce up the dull cinder block walls surrounding a yard.

Adding a statue or a fountain to your yard is a great way to give it some flare. In recent years they have come down in price and are now available in different styles. You can now add cherubs, angles, animals and even children playing to any area of your yard.

If you want to add beautiful plants but don’t have the room to plant them, you may look to add them in decorative pottery. You can find different shapes; sizes and many are now hand painted. Decorative plant shelves and racks are also available.

If you have a tree, you may want to add a hammock. What a treat relaxing under the cool shade during a hot summer day! They come in different styles and colors and if you don’t have a tree, don’t worry, you can purchase a stand in which the hammock is hung on.

Once you get the items you want, experiment a little. Play around with where you may think an item looks best. This is where all the fun is! A Cherub statue may look better in the south corner of your yard next to the fence rather than in the middle of the yard, for example. You can always change your mind later.

Whether you have a large or small yard, it will only take a few items to really change the overall affect of your yard. You will be surprised with what you can create. Most importantly you will have fun doing it.
